Laira Martin

Senior AI Editor and Content Strategist

My journey

Magazine editors are among the most common professions for female protagonists in film and TV. It is a great way to drive the plot after all. I took that inspiration a bit literally making hand-written magazines as child.

I joined my elementary school newspaper as soon as I could. I eventually became editor-in-chief, red lining chapter book reviews on the school bus. I later become the editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper and eventually my university newspaper. I had found my path early on and although I never strayed, I always evolved.

By the time I graduated from UCSD, the start of my career caught the tail-end of print magazines. I worked for a small magazine company where I wrote and edited for four magazines. I became a subject matter chameleon, interviewing golf legends in the morning and law school deans in the afternoon. But at its core, my work was always about storytelling.

I soon made the switch to digital publishing, joining GOBankingRates, where I learned SEO. The intersection of content and SEO clicked for me, allowing me to combine both my right and left brain tendencies into one cohesive strategy backed with data to boot.

I became an SEO, editor, and content marketer all in one. I’ve since taken those combined skillsets and led SEO and content strategies for brands in the finance and beauty categories, driving millions of users and dollars via organic search.

Why I choose to work here every day.

With over 8.5 billion searches a day on Google alone, every business has customers out there looking for answers. I joined Demand.io to help consumers shop smarter online. Whether they’re searching for money saving tips or which Black Friday sales to shop, I’m here to create 10x content that answers their questions and helps them save big every day.

3 things I go all in for.

1

Exercise

I love going on long park or city walks at home or while traveling, stopping at local spots along the way. But I also prioritize weightlifting to build my mental and physical strength.

2

My Dog

My pomston Ghost is my #1 guy. We go on daily walks, snuggle constantly, and he’s always right behind me ready to clean up anything I drop while cooking dinner.

3

Reading

There’s no feeling quite like reading a book. I love a novel or book of essays typically rooted in reality but with a strange twist. Some of my favorite authors are Raymond Carver, Melissa Broder, Joan Didion, and Abraham Verghese.
